A Carl F. H. Henry Center Partner Feature

released 6/13/2025

In this December 2011 lecture, theologian Bruce McCormack outlines the history of the development of the doctrine of the Trinity. He shows how early Christians’ understanding of the nature of God moved from a focus on His oneness to a more full apprehension of His Triune nature. McCormack critiques two related theological concepts — God’s “simplicity” and “impassibility” — and reveals their influence leading up to the Council of Nicaea. He also discusses how these concepts have made a comeback today, and why Christians need a deeper and more robust pro-Nicaean theology to counter their more problematic elements. The full title of the lecture is “From One God to the Trinity: The Creation of the Orthodox Understanding of God.”
