In memory of Mortimer J. Adler, Ken Myers presents a 1980 interview he had with Adler when Myers was a producer of NPR’s Morning Edition. The occasion of the interview was the publication of Adler’s book How to Think about God: A Guide for the Twentieth Century Pagan, in which he argues that belief in the existence of God is rational. Adler believed in the necessity of at least a measure of philosophical literacy among citizens in a democracy, and this book engaged readers in an exercise in philosophical theology. Adler’s interest in faith and reason ultimately led to his conversion to Christianity. This interview was originally published on Volume 50 of the Journal.
