Today (June 28th) is the feast day of St. Irenaeus, the second-century bishop of Lyons. Remembered as a great defender of Christian orthodoxy, especially against the Gnostic heresies, Irenaeus was a pioneer in the art of presenting theological claims systematically and systemically. Thus, as theologian Khaled Anatolios has demonstrated, his defense of the Incarnation against those who believed material reality to be evil also proved to lay the foundations for a Christocentric Christian understanding of the harmony of faith and reason. Today’s Feature presents a reading of an article by Anatolios: “Faith, Reason, and Incarnation in Irenaeus of Lyons.” This essay was published in Nova et Vetera (Vol. 16, No. 2) and is featured here by permission.
