On Thursday, October 2, at 4:30 p.m., poet, novelist, and essayist Paul Kingsnorth will give a lecture at Providence College based on his forthcoming book Against the Machine: The Unmaking of Humanity (Thesis, September 23, 2025). The organizers of the event write, “The crisis of modern times is resisting the encroaching force Paul Kingsnorth calls the Machine. Disguised as ‘progress,’ the Machine is choking Western civilization, destroying the Earth itself, and reshaping us in its image. From the First Industrial Revolution to the rise of artificial intelligence, Kingsnorth argues, a combination of technological, economic, political, and spiritual forces has hollowed out humanity. In the age of the Machine, it will take great effort to preserve our humanity.”
