Writer and producer Geoffrey Zokal discusses his forthcoming film on the life and witness of Jesuit priest and theologian Henri de Lubac (1896–1991). Zokal relies on primary and secondary sources such as de Lubac’s letters and interviews with those who knew him to chronicle his remarkable life, which was shaped in the crucible of the tumultuous 20th century. As Zokal explains, de Lubac deeply lived the themes he wrote about: suffering, sin, and relationships in need of redemption. He also showed great courage in countering the rise of secularization and increasing individualism in the Church with a strong, Christocentric theology. De Lubac held forth a vision of the Church not as a “museum piece” but as a living, dynamic witness to the risen Christ in the world.
The film, De Lubac (Glass Darkly Films, Ignatius Press), is directed by Sam Sorich and edited and co-produced by Andy Adames. It is currently in post-production. Interested listeners can find out more about the film from its website.
