In this January 2024 lecture, Peter Crawford reflects on an anthropology of identity and its implications for the vocation of educators. In an age in which the question of identity has become confusing and has led to the “tyranny of self-creation,” Crawford proposes that teachers can lead children back to the gift of an identity first received, then shaped through what they behold, do, and remember. He shares attributes of good education that include the nurturing of a community of persons, attention to reality and its deeper meaning, deep engagement with the tradition, teaching students to love what is good and to be “hunters for truth,” and more.
