On November 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Anselm House (University of Minnesota) will host the 31st Annual Holmer Lecture in Christianity and the Humanities. This year’s lecturer is Dr. Peter Harrison, author of Some New World: Myths of Supernatural Belief in a Secular Age (Cambridge University Press, 2024). He will speak about the history of the concept of “the supernatural” and will argue that it is a relatively modern idea. From the event description: “[T]he idea of ‘the supernatural’ turns out to be more important for the self-understanding of contemporary naturalists than for religious believers. All of this is suggestive of a new genealogy of secular modernity, one that challenges common misunderstandings of the past and invites a reappraisal of religious thinking in the present.”

Peter Harrison is a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame, Australia and Professor Emeritus of History and Philosophy at the University of Queensland.
