Robert C. Roberts and Mark R. Talbot, editors of Limning the Psyche: Explorations in Christian Psychology (Eerdmans, 1997), discuss the need for Christian psychologists to draw from Christianity’s deep tradition of understanding human nature. Many psychologists don’t interrogate or even see the contestable philosophical underpinnings of their own perspectives on the human psyche, imagining that psychology is metaphysically neutral and purely “scientific.” Roberts and Talbot argue that Christian psychologists should integrate modern psychological models that align with a Christian understanding of the human person and challenge them where they conflict with it. They also explain why human beings need language in order to understand their lives. This interview was originally published on Volume 35 of the Mars Hill Tapes.
