Tiffany Schubert explains tensions in the views of 18th-century authors toward the Middle Ages, specifically in relation to medieval romance literature. The influence of Enlightenment rationalism led many in the 18th century to view past eras with a mix of superiority, disdain, ambivalence, nostalgia, and melancholy. This cultural superiority, one based on time rather than on any transcendent realities, is a defining characteristic of modernity. Schubert argues that Jane Austen’s novels subtly incorporate some medieval literary conventions in ways that enable modern readers to experience a sense of wonder, romance, and the benevolence of Providence. She is the author of Jane Austen’s Romantic Medievalism: Courtly Love and Happy Endings (Lehigh University Press, 2023).
