In this July 2026 lecture, D. C. Schindler asks what it means for Americans if the spirit of revolution is its defining characteristic. To answer that, Schindler explores the difference between revolution as negation and revolt and revolution as a radical return to deeper origins. The nature of the former is to divide and break down, while the nature of the latter is to restore and bring together. A true revolution, Schindler says, is a “recapitulation of the whole in a new way.” The term original expresses perfectly the convergence of tradition and revolution, which he argues are not dialectical but rather complementary forces.
