Sociologist Paul Tyson, author of Your Body Is Holy: The Christian Understanding of Sex (Wipf and Stock, 2025), argues that views about sexuality are downstream from theological — or at least metaphysical — assumptions. He describes how secular ideas about human sexuality have largely replaced a Christian understanding, even for many Christians. Not only is this problematic from a Christian ethics perspective, Tyson says, but also because the secular view does not accord with reality itself. Reality, however — in this case a sense of the sacredness of the human body and of human sexuality — is ingrained and makes itself known to our bodies if not to our minds.
