Church historian Robert Wilken passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 89. This Feature presents part of a conversation Ken Myers had with Dr. Wilken in 1995 about his book Remembering the Christian Past. That anthology included an essay called “Religious Pluralism and Early Christian Thought.” In the interview (which was first heard on Volume 16 of the Mars Hill Tapes), Wilken compares the multiculturalism of late 20th-century liberal societies with that in the first few centuries of the Church’s life, citing Origen’s critique against Celsus as a model for defending Christianity’s claim to make universal statements about what is true and good. Wilken also insists that sustaining faithfulness requires recognizing the possibility of persecution and the sustaining of healthy and visible Christian institutions.
