We began production in 1993, before there were podcasts. And even though aspects of our work are similar to what emerged as podcasts, we’re eager to distinguish what we do from what almost all podcasts do. We think that the patterns of listening encouraged by podcasts deter the form of active engagement that we hope our archive of audio can enable.
While our (free) Friday Feature is podcasty, it is intended as the tip of a large iceberg of content, and our goal is to get listeners to interact with our entire library, not just the weekly “narrowcast.”
Also, in a given week, we may release a few hours of lectures from our 20+ Partners, one or more Archive Features harvested from our back issues, or an extended Conversation from a recent (or not so recent) interview.
So we have decided to distribute our audio via our own app and website, but not on the conventional podcast platforms. (There are other, more technical reasons behind this decision as well.)
