What does it mean that Flannery O’Connor claimed for herself the moniker “hillbilly Thomist”? In this October 2025 lecture, Jennifer Frey explores Thomist elements in O’Connor’s theology and writing, with a particular emphasis on a Thomist understanding of art. A Christian artist must practice habits of contemplation and attentiveness to reality; not only this, but she must conform herself to that reality and learn to delight in it as God given. This was O’Connor’s view, and she believed that it is God’s grace that both pierces the veil of perception (in dramatic, unsettling, and even violent ways as necessary) and enables one to live in the light of reality. Frey concludes with a close reading of O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” illuminating in it the author’s Thomist vision.
