A CiRCE Institute Partner Feature

Dr. D. C. Schindler spoke at the CiRCE Institute’s July 2025 national conference, the theme of which was “A Contemplation of Building.” Schindler approaches the idea of building from a perspective of philosophical anthropology, starting with the paradox that man is both a spiritual being and an embodied spirit. We are body and soul, directed heavenward — toward transcendence — and earthward, making our home in matter, the stuff of Creation. From this understanding of what human nature is, Schindler explores the idea that culture is a spiritualizing of matter and a materializing of spirit. Building, he says, is a quintessential human activity and an expression of our view of the meaning of reality. If our understanding of reality is misshapen, the things we build will impoverish our humanity. On the other hand, if our understanding of reality — and especially of the Creator of reality — is sound and sane, our buildings will be beautiful and will augment and nurture our humanity.
