In this July 2026 lecture, storyteller Nicholas Kotar speaks of the role of the “idiot” in Russian fairy tales, one whose simplicity and humility lead to wisdom and the transformation of those around them. Through his dramatic telling of two Russian tales, Kotar explores how Russian culture celebrates the simple saint who, through supposed idiocy, reveals the upside-down nature of the world and recalls those around him to true virtue. In times of great cultural and historical upheaval, stories of the “holy fool” have given Russians the spiritual and moral wisdom they most need.
