In this 2021 lecture, Dr. John Médaille examines the Christian roots of liberalism and how liberalism might be recovered from the heresy of secularism. Beginning with a historical survey of its rise, mutation, total victory, and inherent failure, Médaille reveals how some of liberalism’s key aspects — individualism, natural rights, and democracy — were rooted in Christian thought. Over time, however, liberalism’s strongest ally became secular capitalism, which Médaille says has “colonized” religion and every other societal institution, remaking all in its own image. He concludes with a three-pronged proposal for recovering a healthy liberalism for the flourishing of human societies.
