Andrew Kern, author of Unless the Lord Builds the House: Shared Foundations for Christian Education (CiRCE Institute, 2024), explores the symbol of the temple in Scripture. He traces the ubiquity and power of the image throughout the Old and New Testaments and discusses what its pattern means for teaching and learning. The temple is a fruitful paradigm for all of life and reality, Kern argues. Through its pattern we are able to receive and perceive what God reveals in Creation, to honor the glory of each created thing, and to come into unity and harmony with the world. Kern stresses the necessity of love in order to know; love precedes reason, he says. True education, therefore, is to love and participate in the things that we study and teach.
