In the Fall of 2023, James Matthew Wilson gave a lecture exploring the nature of tradition as a “condition of possibility” that situates both reason and poetry. He praises Alasdair MacIntyre and T. S. Eliot for their insights into tradition and shows how they expose liberalism as a kind of tradition, albeit one that pretends otherwise. Just as it is impossible to reason without standing in some kind of tradition, Wilson says it is impossible to write a poem without drawing on poetic tradition. In his own efforts to learn and practice the art of poetry, Wilson discovered the varying philosophies of tradition, but he said that one thing they seem to lack is the experience of gratitude one feels when encountering the riches and beauty and wisdom of a dynamic tradition. When we engage this tradition — this argument extended through time — the outcome is a closer approach to truth and to reality.
