In 1995, upon the occasion of the centenary of the motion picture, a pontifical commission compiled a list of 45 films recognized by the Vatican as culturally, morally, or spiritually important. David Paul Baird, co-author (with Andrew Petiprin and Michael Ward) of Popcorn with the Pope: A Guide to the Vatican Film List (Word on Fire, 2023), discusses some of the films on the list, which are divided into three categories, “Religion,” “Values,” and “Art.” Baird explains how the films on the list lead viewers to contemplate more serious questions related to life, death, suffering, sin, and Divine providence.
